Ural Basic Service: Ural Maintenance CD, Disc 2

Filed Under (Ural Repair and Maintenance) by Anthony StClair on 08-04-2008

Second Post - See first post about Disk 1

One of the allures of the Ural is that even the average rider – even non mechanically-minded schmucks like me – can do their own maintenance and service. To help us along, Ural has a 2-disc CD set that covers the basic service (IMWA 0032, 750 cc Basic Service (2 disc set), MSRP $23.99). I ordered a copy when I got my bike, and would recommend that any new Ural owner order a copy too.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far, from the Ural maintenance procedures themselves to tools and equipment I’ll need in the garage.

Ural Basic Service, Disc 2 Contents

  • Bearing Adjustment
  • Clutch Adjustment
  • Fuel Filter Service
  • Linkage Lubrication
  • Spark Plug Inspection
  • Spoke Tensioning
  • Steering Bearing Service
  • Tire Tread Inspection
  • Fork Oil Change
  • Factory Demo
  • Thanks
  • Literature (shop manual, part list, etc.)

Pretty much every procedure covered on the CD can be done with the screwdrivers, wrenches allen (hex) wrenches or other tools that come in any new Ural’s stock toolkit. As many sage Ural owners recommend, “do your maintenance with what you carry” – so either bust out that stock tool kit and get to work, or stock your rig’s tool kit with tools you both carry in your rig and you use to work on your Ural at home (or roadside…). Here are some additional tools and such that you’ll need:

In general you’ll want…

  • Scissor jack (the ones that come with Honda sedans have been recommended to me – to get one cheap, check your local junkyard)
  • Wee pry bars
  • WD40
  • 5W/10 Fork Oil (135 ml/4.6 oz.) for the Fork Oil Change

Most of the procedures on this disk were very straightforward. For example, checking your Spoke Tensioning was shown as just tapping each spoke, checking for consistent sound, and tightening any spokes that didn’t sound the same as the others.

The Steering Bearing Service and Fork Oil Change look like they have a lot of steps, but in practice I don’t think they’ll be too bad. They just look kind of initimidating at first, at least for a not-too-mechanical Ural newbie.

After all the video demos are done, you can also browse through the CD to some useful documents, such as the shop manual and a parts list. Again, this 2-disk CD set is a must-have for the Ural owner.

  1. Would you say that this CD set covers all that the shop manual covers? I was going to buy the shop manual, not sure if I should buy both.

  2. I’d recommend you get the CD set, watch it, then look at the PDF of the shop manual (older manual, not the newer one) included on the CD set, then see if you still need the new shop manual.

The CD set covers basic to moderate procedures. If you’re thinking of getting the newer manual, I’d save the money; from what I’ve seen from folks on the various Ural message boards, they’ve been pretty underwhelmed by the new manual. However, the CD set does include a PDF of the older shop manual. So that way you get a shop manual, but you still also get the good step-by-step visuals of the videos.

  3. many thanks, have just bought a ranger outfit,i,m in ireland. sure want to look after it. will order the cd. do you know if i can watch it on a mac?. thanks again. brian

  4. Far as I know it’ll work on a mac, I don’t think the OS should matter. Enjoy your Ranger, drop me a line and let me know how you’re getting on!
