Replacing a Broken Ural Turn Signal, Part 2

Ural Wiring and Flasher Unit

Narrowing down the problem

In Replacing a Broken Ural Turn Signal, Part 1, my turn signals had stopped working and I was using the knowledge on the Soviet Steeds message boards to get the gist of what was going on. Now I’m narrowing down the problem, and I’m pretty sure it’s the flasher unit (as opposed to other wiring or fuse issues). This guess is based in large part off the experiences and comments of another Ural owner on Steeds, because his comment relays exactly what happened with my Ural too:

They first started not blinking now they don’t even light (the indicator on the instrument panel still lights but stays on). I suspect the flasher died.

Look under the controls ma, lots of wires

Yup, exactly what happened with my Ural Patrol. To get a good look at the bulk of the wiring, you turn the handlebars all the way to the left. A flashlight will help, but a headlamp is even better to help amateur Ural mechanics look around under the controls to where the mess of wiring is. Here’s a photo of the flasher unit, the probable culprit:

Ural Flasher Unit - these often konk out early

In technical jargon, the flasher unit is the round thingie with the clear plastic cover in the above photo. These flasher units tend to konk out early, sometimes as early as the first 100km! I’m checking with my dealer to see if Ural will cover this under warranty, but in the meantime I’m going to see about replacing it myself.

According to that same Soviet Steeds thread, these are just a 3-prong flasher unit that you can just pull and replace easily. A quick trip to the auto parts store should hopefully have us sussed out…

Update (4/20/08): No trip to the auto parts after all. Jim at Raceway Services (my Ural dealer) is sending me out a new flasher unit. He said it definitely sounded like the flasher — and, best of all, it’ll be covered under the Ural’s warranty. I’ll update again once I’ve received the new flasher unit.

  1. Thank you for posting the pic. Jim is sending me a flasher unit for my 2007 Gear-UP. Flasher went out around 100km or less. I’m not sure yet but we think that is the problem.

  2. Yup, Jim is sending me out a flasher too. It’s most likely the problem for both our bikes - the ones Ural’s currently sourcing haven’t been very reliable, hopefully they’ll change up to something better soon. Let me know when you get yours - I hope that sorts it out!

Should be a quick and easy fix - Jim told me you just pull out the old unit like pulling an electrical plug out of its socket.

  3. I’ll let you know. I emailed Jim the other day and he has to send me out another unit I never got the first one. USPS might be the reason.

  4. Mine should be en route - just yanked the old one tonight, and I’m going to get that in the mail to him shortly.

  5. Hey…Just got mine in the mail and put it in. Yahoo…now I have signals.

  6. Awesome Dena! May you have many kms of turning signal success :-)

  7. I just replaced mine on my Patrol with less than 1000km on the cycle. The dealer told me it wasn’t covered by the warranty. He also told me he was not able to find anything to replace it at any auto parts stores. The cost was $19.99 for the new one. I have signals again.

  8. That’s pretty crap. If you head to Soviet Steeds and search around the forums there, you can turn up model #s and everything for replacement flasher units.

Far as I’m aware too, that flasher unit should’ve been under warranty. Mine was, and that’s been the experience for others who’ve dealt with the flasher unit gremlin.
