Oakshire Brewing, Ella & Svetlana

The famous Ural hack monkey of Eugene

This… is just cool.

Ell and Anthony on Svetlana and showing their support for Oakshire Brewing, Eugene

A little while back, Ella, Svetlana and I were in a photo shoot. With photography by Eugene’s Jon Christopher Meyers, our own homegrown, homebrewers-turned pros Chris and Jeff Althouse were getting pictures for a big rebranding campaign. Changing their brewery’s name from Willamette Brewery to Oakshire Brewing, they just unveiled the new brand — and the new marketing campaign to go with it.

Keep an eye out for ads and posters like the one above; you’ll see people playing frisbee golf, riding bikes, rafting, and, of course, riding sidecar motorcycles. People who enjoy life. Who enjoy the Northwest. And who, of course, enjoy a good beer.

Raise your glass

It was great to help out these folks. The Althouses (well, nowadays more their head brewer, Todd) brew excellent beer, ranging from a Hefeweizen to an IPA to an espresso stout that contains one shot of espresso per pint. They’re a homegrown company, with a big focus on quality and on sourcing everything for the beer and the business as close to home as they can. You can find Oakshire beers on tap from Eugene to Portland — and if you don’t see it on tap at your favorite watering hole, be sure to ask if they can get a keg in.

We had a great time helping out Jon and the Althouses. And now, Ella and the Ural seem to be becoming, if not famous, then certainly notorious around Eugene. That’s my hack monkey — always stealing the show!

  1. What, no helmet? shame, shame.

Great site by the way. Really enjoy reading your exploits and experiences with a new Ural. Have a bit of the bug myself and since I live in socal, the weather is always perfect for riding. The only thing is fact that LA lives on freeways. That’s a bit of an issue.

  2. I know, very bad of me. If it helps, I was going about 5 mph :-)

Glad you’re digging the blog, Zac. I’ll warn you now though, if you’re feeling the Ural bug, it’s only a matter of time. I hear where you’re coming from with LA and the freeways - are there any other options for you down there?

  3. I work in the film business as a camera assistant, which means that I have lots of gear that I take to set. I somehow manage to lug it around in my VW Golf (it’s a bit tight), but there is no way I could fit it in a ural ( I have two equipment carts and several Portabrace bags worth of gear). The ideal would be to lug the gear to set once and then ride the bike to location for the rest of the shoot. Unfortunately, LA is freeway addicted and it is difficult to take surface roads to locations given how large Los Angeles is and how many different places I shoot each year.

Still, the bug persists and hopefully I can land a studio show on a lot where the bike would be practical.

Keep up the good work on the blog and keep the tips coming for current newbies and potential newbies alike.

PS - I actually did a film a couple of years ago in Eugene and I enjoyed the town very much.
