Eugene Ural Ride: Sunset at Skinner Butte

Curing cabin fever

Ural Patrol at Skinner Butte, Eugene, Oregon

This week’s weather has known no constancy. A bit of sun, then hail. Then chilly sunlight. Then pounding rain. Then more pounding rain. Then a bit of hail, and all the while, chill and chill and chill.

So this evening, with clouds breaking and the air, well, approaching warm, I found myself in the living room with a hellish bout of cabin fever. A volume of Yeats, one of my favorite poets, lay on my lap, but I kept thinking I should go for a ride. “No,” I thought, “the weather’s going to go to hell again.” I opened the Yeats, skimmed it, put it aside. I looked out the window again. Shook my head. Opened the book again, skimmed it again, shut it again. It was 6:30 p.m.; I looked out the window once more, wondering if the weather would be decent for the reminder of the day, or if ominous clouds would roll in and break at any moment.

Finally I said the hell with it, and geared up for a ride.

I didn’t want to go far, didn’t need to go far. I just needed to get out for a little while. A few minutes thought gave me the answer: ride up Skinner Butte.

Oregon Ural Road Trip: Eugene to Blachly/Triangle Lake via Highway 36

On Sunday, Jodie and I loaded up Ella the Hack Hound and a picnic lunch for our first road trip together. We ran a quick day trip, about 3 hours, up Highway 36 to Blachly, Oregon, and Triangle Lake. More to come on that, but here’s our pre-trip fill-up stats:

  • Gas Price Per Gallon: $3.799
  • Gallons: 2.614
  • Fuel Total: $9.93
  • Tripmeter at fuel-up: 200km/124 miles (approx)
  • kpg/mpg (approx.) 77kpg/47mpg
  • Odometer at fuel-up: 702km/436 miles
  • Date & Time: Sunday, Apr. 13, 2008, 11:27 a.m.
  • Gas Station: Santa Clara Chevron, 2785 River Road, Eugene, Oregon
  • Fuel: Supreme (91 or 92 octane)

Notes on mileage: Sweet merciful crap! Including Thursday’s return trip from Corvallis to Eugene, I’ve been running the bike around town every day, with a combo of in-town and a bit of freeway travel. This jump in mileage from the 30s to 47mpg is a very nice surprise. I could get used to this! We’ll probably do about 100km or so on today’s road trip, which will be 45-55mph throughout the foothills of Oregon’s Coast Range, with both Jodie and Ella in the sidecar, so it will be interesting to see what the mileage is for my next fill-up. Still, 47mpg – wow, wow, wow.

Successful 500km Service & First Road Trip

This will be short, as it’s late and I’m knackered. Andy and I had a great ride from Eugene to Salem. Service on both our Urals went great (thanks to Jim, Tony and Kurt at Raceway Services for their skills, patience and willingness to answer heaps of newbie Ural owner questions).

I rode home solo, as Andy was staying in Salem. Great trip back; both the Patrol and its owner did fine.

But I’m tired. There are pictures to prep and posts to write, but the short of it is that I’m home safe and sound, and Andy and I had a great outing. More to come.

Oregon Road Trip: Salem to Eugene via Corvallis

After getting our bikes serviced at Raceway Services, Andy was staying up in Salem and was soon heading back to his home in Juneau, Alaska. (Quick aside – his 5-year-old boy has no idea his dad’s bringing home an Arctic camo sidecar motorcycle. I can’t wait to hear how the kid reacts!)

On my way back home to Eugene from Salem, I stopped outside Corvallis to fuel up:

  • Gas Price Per Gallon: $3.659
  • Gallons: 2.068
  • Fuel Total: $7.57
  • Tripmeter at fuel-up: 108km/67 miles (approx)
  • kpg/mpg (approx.) 52kpg/32mpg
  • Odometer at fuel-up: 582km/361.7 miles
  • Date & Time: Thursday, Apr. 10, 2008, 4:31 p.m.
  • Gas Station: Highway 20 Market (Texaco, I believe), 2415 NE Hwy. 20, Corvallis, Oregon
  • Fuel: “Supreme” 91-92 octane (I believe; making a mental note to write this on my fuel receipts from now on)

Notes on mileage: Combo of back roads, town and highway (45-55mph) driving. Nice to see the mileage hanging in the 30-35mpg range. Next few tanks of gas should be a good indicator of how mileage is averaging out. I’m expecting to see this 30-35mpg range stay more constant, due to the continued break-in of the Ural, plus the service and maintenance just completed, including changing all fluids, torquing the engine’s head bolts, and adjusting the valves. Will see if time bears this out.

Oregon Road Trip: Eugene to Salem via Albany

Just a quick top-off outside of Albany, Oregon, before Andy Grow and I continued via back roads to Salem and Raceway Services. I paid cash and didn’t get a receipt this time, so I don’t have the gas station name and address.

  • Gas Price Per Gallon: $3.699
  • Gallons: 1.287
  • Fuel Total: $4.76
  • Tripmeter at fuel-up: 72km/45 miles (approx)
  • kpg/mpg (approx.) 56kpg/35mpg
  • Odometer at fuel-up: 474km/294.5 miles
  • Date & Time: Thursday, Apr. 10, 2008, 10:55 a.m.
  • Gas Station: unknown; off I-5 outside Albany, Oregon
  • Fuel: unknown; 91 or 92 octane most likely

Notes on mileage: Much improved mileage – from 25mpg to 35mpg. Just like in a car, running a consistent 45-55 mph seems to have greatly helped fuel economy. This is still before we’ve gotten first service done, and my Ural Patrol is still being broken in, so it will be interesting to see how these numbers change over time. May eventually try to brave a spreadsheet or graph illustrating change in Ural’s gas mileage. If so, note to self, have a night-in and drink some scotch to make working with a spreadsheet a bearable experience (spreadsheets and I don’t get along well).

Oregon Road Trip: Eugene to Salem via Albany

Andy Grow and I fueled up in the morning before heading to Salem. This was our first fill-up; here is the second (a quick top-off), and my fill-up for the trip back home.

  • Gas Price Per Gallon: $3.799
  • Gallons: 3.130
  • Fuel Total: $11.89
  • Tripmeter at fuel-up: 127km/79 miles (approx)
  • kpg/mpg (approx.) 41kpg/25mpg
  • Odometer at fuel-up: 395km/245.5 miles
  • Date & Time: Thursday, Apr. 10, 2008, 9:16 a.m.
  • Gas Station: Santa Clara Chevron, 2785 River Road, Eugene, Oregon
  • Fuel: “Supreme” 92 octane

Notes on mileage: Still holding around 25mpg mark. Not great, but not bad. Again, usually this improves as the bike is broken in. Will see if there’s a difference after the service. Also wondering how the mileage will differ since most of this tank of gas will be used at 45mph-55mph on a longer trip, instead of lower speeds for errands/around the neighborhood travel.

Road Trip & 500km Service

New Arctic Gear-Up owner Andy Grow and I are heading to Salem today. The ride up from Eugene should take a couple of hours, and we’re planning to spend much of the day at Raceway, staying out of the mechanic’s way while observing them service our Urals. It’s going to be an interesting trip. Andy’s already logged quite a few miles in Oregon, but this will be my first big road trip. Can’t wait to let you know how it all goes!

The Roadtrip

  • Eugene to Salem, Oregon
  • Distance: approx. 65 miles
  • Date: Thursday, April 10, 2008
  • Route: 99W, back roads

A Family Ride to the Dog Park

Filed Under (Ella the Hack Hound, Trip Journals) by Anthony StClair on 23-03-2008

Jodie and Ella, geared up, doggled up and ready to head to the dog park
A foggy Saturday morning finally gave way to a sunny afternoon, so Jodie and I geared up, got Ella in her doggles, and took our first true around-town family trip together. The destination? Eugene’s Candelight Park, an off-leash dog park in west Eugene.

We’d ridden around the neighborhood a little, but this was the first time all 3 of us had ridden around town together. I couldn’t be happier with how it went. Ella was completely relaxed — she didn’t even mind her doggles too much. We also got in some WWID (What Would Ivan Do?) thinking, when it came to our helmets.

First off was a systems check:

  • Oil: Level fine.
  • Tire Pressure: Pumped up all the tires, as they’d been getting a bit low. Filled tires to manual specs: 32 psi in the front tire, 30 psi in the sidecar tire, and 40 psi in the rear tire.
  • Brake Lights and Turn Signals: All operational.

After a trip to the gas station, we rode off to the dog park.

Getting used to Doggles

Ella is still getting used to wearing her Doggles. After we got her in the sidecar and she nuzzled down in the tub, the first couple of miles were iffy Doggles-wise. On the way to the gas station, Ella nudged off her Doggles. On the next leg of the ride though, she kept them on and did fine — we’re guessing she realized they made a difference in the wind hitting her in the face.

WWID: Rigging up a helmet lock

Since we were going to be walking around a park with Ella, we didn’t want to have to worry about our helmets. We haven’t snagged up helmet locks yet, but while at home in the garage we realized we might not need to. A bicycle’s locking cable and U-lock later, and we rigged up a helmet lock that secured both helmets to the sidecar windshield’s grab bar. It’s perhaps not a perfect system, but it works well for now.

Comfort level

Before leaving the house, I felt pretty nervous about this ride. It was a perfect day weather-wise, but it was also 1) the farthest afield I’d gone on the rig, and 2) the first time driving around with both Jodie and Ella. These were just early jitters though — a couple of minutes in the saddle, and I felt fine. More importantly, Jodie felt fine too, and she told me later that she felt perfectly safe with my driving. That was great to hear, and it shows I’m really getting the hang of my Ural Patrol.

This was a great ride around town. We had a good destination. Going to the dog park, something Ella really enjoys, also helped further reinforce an association that the sidecar and even the Doggles are positive things — they mean she gets to go to cool places that she loves.

And as for us humans, we had a great time. Driving around Jodie and Ella — and all the waves, smiles and thumbs-up that go with it — is exactly the fun experience I had hoped and knew it would be.

Ural Gas Mileage: Mar. 22, 2008 Fill-up

  • Gas Price Per Gallon: $3.759
  • Gallons: 3.029
  • Fuel Total: $11.39
  • Tripmeter at fuel-up: 122km/76 miles (approx)
  • kpg/mpg (approx.) 40kpg/25mpg
  • Odometer at fuel-up: 268km/166.5 miles
  • Date & Time: Saturday, Mar. 22, 2008, 1:39 p.m.
  • Gas Station: Jacksons Store (Shell), 1809 W. 6th Ave., Eugene, Oregon
  • Fuel: “V-Power” 91 octane (some Ural owners say they don’t go for the high-test; I respect their opinions, but for my money, I’m going to listen to what the manual says and pony up the extra coins per gallon)

Notes on mileage: I feel a bit disappointed about the 25mpg mileage, but it’s not without hope. I’d have to check around to see, but if I remember correctly mileage improves after break-in. I believe my tires had also been low for the past couple of rides, and that would have negatively impacted the mileage too. Will be more diligent about checking air pressure.

Ready.

Sunday’s ride marked a definite turning point for me.

  • No ballast
  • Rode all range of speeds, from 25mph to 55mph
  • Rode in traffic

It all sums up to one thing: I’m ready for regular ol’ Ural driving. It’s a good feeling, and one I’ve just got from the inside out. I’ve had my bike for a little less than a month, and feel really good about the pace I’ve taken to learn my Patrol and how it rides.

Time to start taking it out properly.

Jodie and Ella will be so happy…
