Ural Patrol Update: It’s here, or, when you take delivery of your Ural
Filed Under (Bikeography) by Anthony StClair on 16-02-2008
Update on delivery of my Ural Patrol. Raceway arrived around 1:30, just as I was starting to wash dishes as a way of keeping my mind occupied.
Walkin’ and talkin’ the Ural Patrol
Delivery chap, Kurt, was courteous, friendly and professional. Gave me a good rundown of my Ural Patrol and its parts, plus all the goodies in the trunk, including:
- Floor pump
- Jack and flat repair kit
- Tool kit
- Touch-up paint (green and black)
- Spare oil filter, spark plugs and oil additive
- Manual
- 750cc maintenance CD (not standard, but something I’d ordered when I ordered the bike)
Kurt explained and showed me how to work the enricheners for the carburetors, and then we cranked up my Patrol. It had a slight sputter at first, but after about a minute or so settled into a nice rhythmic pur.
The two things I wish I’d asked Kurt to demonstrate are shifting into reverse and engaging the sidecar drive. He explained it, and I’m sure I’ll figure it out, but I should’ve asked him to go through the maneuvers once, so I could actually see it.
No job is over till the paperwork is done
Once we’d gone through the fun part — going over the components, checking out the tub, talking about how 120 lbs. is the recommended amount of ballast for new sidecar owners, we sat down and went through the paperwork. This took about 10 minutes, and it was mostly me just scanning over forms, signing and putting my copy off to one side, with the occasional question for Kurt.
Here’s a breakdown of the forms we went over:
- Receipt
- Ural Sidecar Safety Training Rebate
- Certificate of Origin for a Vehicle
- Ural Card of Delivery (details the dealer’s notes on Pre-Trial Run, Trial Run and Post-Trial Run)
- DMV Secure Odometer Disclosure/Reassignment (basically, acknowledging what the odometer says)
- Purchase Order (what dealer fills out to order rig from Ural and assign customer to that specific motorcycle and its VIN)
- Test Record - Vehicle Temps (temperature test, measured via infrared, performed when motorcycle goes through test runs)
- Checklist of Raceway’s Pre-Delivery Services (PDI)
- “We Owe You” from Raceway. Some of the accessories I ordered (trunk lock and spare tire cover) weren’t available at time of delivery. This was Jim’s note to me that he’d have those for me when I brought the Patrol to Salem for my 500km first service.
Once the paperwork was done, Kurt and I shook hands and he hit the road, leaving me to ogle my new Patrol. To let it sink in that my Ural was actually, truly, finally here. To see that this wee dream of mine has come true. To get ready to ride.

Excellent! Congratulations!
Thank you! It is sweet, sweet, sweet. I am so glad it’s finally here.
Great ride.I know the feeling.I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my 08 white Patrol, due in april.Until then I will keep staring at the pictures.
Mike - congratulations! It’s going to be one of the coolest things you ever get - but you know that already.
I like my 07 i had a 02 had a lot of problimes dont have room to right it all but i know how to work on a ural my 07 was broke in on our trip to Baja 2100 miles wish all well on your urals hope to see you on the road ?
I got the 07 patrol and do love it, it is very workable and old-fashion. I look at my 07 r1200rt and just shake my head, but the Ural is easy to fix. If you have worked on your own car and not screwed it up, you can fix these. I pulled the differenial to replace the slide seal on the primary driveshaft, one hour and no problems. The repair manual is a must if you work on it, I highly recommend this. The jets in the carbs are trouble but easy to replace and then they run great. The dealer I bought from was not great but found very friendly and smart people in Holopaw, FL that don’t mind helping and advising. Working now on a hitch so I can put my wifes wheelchair on the back hanging instead of on the rack. Happy riding, GF
Heya Glenn, yeah, I’ve heard good things about Holopaw too. Good to know there’s some reliable folks! I agree with you on the repairs; I’ll never be Mr. Mechanical, but I think I’ll be able to muddle through the Ural all right.
I too have had dealings with Gene & Paul. I first called seeing its 2 hrs to Holopaw to check on parts. They had them went & got them & spent an hour talking motorcycles.
Wife, Cindy, and I just arrived home with our ‘08 Patrol after service by Gene and Paul at Holowpaw. While in for service Gene and Paul installed the electronic ignition system we picked up from Jim at Raceway Services in Salem, Oregon. The difference in how the bike runs is significantly improved over stock. Much smoother from start to interstate travel. Another ural rider, Jim, from Vero Beach, pulled in to Holopaw and we asked him to test drive our bike to get another opinion before we drove it the 165 miles back to Gulfport, Florida. Jim commented on the smoothness, lack of “barking” and the quality of the ride. Cindy, who rode her BMW 650 to Alaska this year, had been critical of the Ural at start and with uneven ignition at cruise until today. The ride home was great. Gene also installed a set of Retro metal mirrors to replace the plastic stock items which tended to adjust themselves at speeds above 50 MPH. The Retro mirrors are, in my opinion, a safety upgrade.
I am seeking to purchase a service manual for my 2007 Ural Retro motorcycle. The Canadian Ural Distributor does not have one in stock and is unable to say when one will be available. I would appreciate the contact details for obtaining a paper copy of same. If you also know of a paper aftermarket service manual that may be as good or better than the Ural factory manual for the 2007 Ural Retro I’d appreciate that infor too. Thanks and
appreciation. / Norman
