Ural Toolkit

What’s in your tool roll?

Toolkit, Open
In a way, it’s a personal question, but one the Uralist is generally all to happy to answer. And keep answering. And defend to the death his answer, whilst being not too derogatory of the misguided yet well-meaning answers that others might provide.

Well, not really. Uralists are always happy to talk about what they carry in their sidecars and trunks, because hey, when you can haul pretty much anything you want, you enjoy bragging about it a wee bit. As for me, well, yeah I like to talk about what I carry too.

Here’s what’s in Svetlana’s toolkit (photos too, and more below the list)…

  • Tool roll, closed4 Allen wrenches, various sizes
  • 2 razors
  • 1 turny handle thing (I’m sure it has a proper name, but I can’t think of it)
  • Pliers
  • Folding half-serrated pocketknife
  • Ball-peen hammer (or, BFH — Big Feckin’ Hammer)
  • 2 flathead screwdrivers, 1 large, 1 teeny
  • 2 Phillips screwdrivers, 1 medium, 1 teeny
  • 1 spanner wrench
  • 1 misc wrench (open end, ring end and 2 prong bits that are used for removing the spare tire from the top of the trunk)
  • Varying sizes of metric wrenches, from 6mm to 22mm

That’s my main tool roll, anyway. There are a few more miscellaneous items I carry in a zip case, but that’s another post.

More photos of what’s in my toolkit…

  1. HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH YOUR URAL? IF SO, WHAT INSTRIMENTATION OR METERING DEVICES DO YOU EMPLOY TO TROUBLE-SHOOT THE PROBLEM. MY BRAND NEW PATROL WITH 52 KLICK ON THE BIKE JUST REFUSED TO START AFTER A SHORT BREAK THIS MORNING; NO SPARK @ THE PLUGS. ANY THOUGHT?

  2. Only electrical problem I’ve had so far is the flasher, and that was a pretty quick fix (new unit to replace the crapped-out one).

Couple of basics to check, first off…

    - gas in the tank?
    - how long are you leaving the enricheners open? Any longer than 10-20 seconds, and you might be fouling the spark plugs. Pop off the plugs and see if they need drying out.

Give your dealer a holler too, and run things by them. Most Ural dealers are good about being able to do some troubleshooting over the phone. Check Soviet Steeds as well - do some searches on “won’t start” or “electrical” in the Hammerin’ and Wrenchin’ forum.

Good luck - let me know what was going on. I hope you’re riding again soon!
