Ural Gas Cap

Stuck with chrome, or switch to black?

Ural Locking Gas CapThis evening I thought I was having my first problem with the Ural: the gas cap wouldn’t turn. It wasn’t locked, and luckily I wasn’t out of gas, but I could not get the bloody thing to turn. The cap would turn to a certain point, like trying to get over a hump that you just… couldn’t… quite… get over.

I shrugged and did the only sane thing in this situation: I went for a ride.

RPOC?

When I got the rig parked back in the garage I tried again. Came right off. I’m going to keep an eye on it, though I have seen people on various message boards mention that these stock locking gas caps can be a RPOC (or, Russian Piece of Cap Crap), locked or not:

“Take a strap wrench and remove that ugly chrome gas cap and throw it away. Get yourself a nice black plastic one”

Black, Non-Locking Gas Cap - photo credit Crawford Ural, MichiganI may go ahead and replace it, seeing how things go. At the least, I’m not bothered about locking the gas cap — though I could also see myself liking a black gas cap over chrome. In addition to seeing if Raceway Services has any non-locking, black gas caps, Crawford Ural in Michigan carries plenty of Ural accessories, including black gas caps (pictured at right).

  1. Finally got tired of the out of place chrome gas cap on my GU. I got this part number from an IMZ board thread. Stant # 10817
I went to the local Napa store and told the kid behind the counter I needed a gas cap. He said “no problem, what car?” I told him he wouldn’t find it in his computer, he gave me a look until I told him it was for a Russian motorcycle then he said “oh”. Kind of fun to do that! Any way I gave him a part number(Item#: BK 7031231) and off he went and came back with a nice black cap. (Shiny, not flat black, I’ll have to work on that.)I took it out to try it on the bike and here was a guy looking the bike over. He said that the black looks much better! And asked why I put a chrome on in the first place! Went through the entire UDF speal(sp?) with him. Best $6.09 I’ve spent on the bike to date!

I posted the above here: http://sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=295

  2. Yeah, for a Gear-Up especially, I’m surprised it’s a chrome cap. Go figure. I’m keeping an eye on mine. It’s been fine lately, and I don’t mind the chrome on the Patrol, but it still could get swapped out at some point. Thanks for passing along a replacement part, very helpful.

  3. I have a 2008 Gear up and I could not remove the Locking gas cap on more than one Occasion..I asked the counter man at Auto Zone for a stant gas cap part number 10817..He said stant no longer makes that cap and he gave me an equivalent CST,Inc. (cooling systmes technology) part # 6817. The cap was $7.50 and looks just like the stant cap. He also told me the stant cap #10817 will also translate into the equivalent of Beck/Arnely part # 159-0042 and IMC Motorad part # 240-46001-672..The motorad cap is $ 19.00..I have not seen either cap but I can say that the CST cap works just fine…It’s black non locking and vented..
